  2. For the Love of Kevin
After being inspired by the Julia and Julie project blog, I have decided to start a blog about a little feathered friend that came into my life on January 10th 2011and turned my world upside down. To start my blog I need to rewind a wee bit. My name is Shelley and I live in Hamilton New Zealand, as a result of making another stupid New Years resolution to walk every day, and having heard about a lovely walk not far from us my husband and I decided three days into the New Year to explore this park called Taitua Arboretum at the end of Howdens Road.
Well actually I checked it out the night before along with my two little grand daughters Rayne a Mia, but it was right on dusk and a bit dark so only ventured a wee way into the park. At the time I remember seeing a lot of chooks and roasters, well at least I knew they were there somewhere cause I could hear them crowing and making a racket, we managed to find a few roosting up a big tree in the car park.
So the next night bribed my youngest Son Caleb and his partner Ruhia and littlest grandson Tamihana to come on a picnic with my husband Wiremu and I in the park. We armed outsells with baskets full of bread and dips and fresh cherry’s feta cheese and crackers and sat down at the beginning of the walk to have a picnic in the park. When we had finished my dear husband said he would carry the picnic basket back to the car for us, as he left he called over his shoulder “oh don’t wait up for me”…hahaha so off we went on our new adventure minus the husband.
As we tracked thought the bush and over a bridge Rui and I were startled by what looked like a real Moa standing in the bush, in the dusk light it looked so real; so called the boys to come back and see it. Turns out it was a large cut out of a Moa. While we walked along we discovered many Chooks and chickens which we feed with some of our left over bread, further on we found ducks geese and many more chooks and rooster all happy to partake of our left overs. We spent ½ and hour in the beautiful tree planted reserve and loved every minute of it.
Over the next few days we invited another son Jarom and his partner Aana and grand daughter Makyla to join us, each time we would go armed with more and more bread and created quiet a following. This night we did the full trail which took us around 40 minutes, as we were approaching the cut out of the Moa my little 2 year old grandson who was on his father’s shoulders calls out I want to see Kevin. He was a real fan of the movie Up and had likened the Moa to Kevin. Often he would walk along and declare “names Russell” off of the movie.
Eventually my husband joined us and also started to enjoy our nightly walks. It was on the night of January 10th with a little bit of light rain falling that my husband and I pulled into the car park of the Arboretum, and noticed a little buff coloured hen with 8 tiny little chickens. Having never seen her before we knew that the chickens had to be only a day old. As we watch these little bundles of yellow fluff running around after their mother and the bread crumbs we were throwing down for them. My eyes were drawn to one little chick which was staggering behind the rest with a crooked little leg. My husband first response was “pick it up it won’t last out here something will get it.” I suggested we leave it until we had completed our walk, which we did then as it was right on dusk when we came out the mother and chicks had disappeared. After searching around for a bit we found her with her chicks all under her in a bush, the chicks quickly came out for more bread, but the wee one fell behind, so I gently scooped it up and held it close to me. We then got in the car and with the wee buddle of yellow fluff tucked down my top headed for home.
    More to come……………
